Don’t forget to check out the art gallery, where I daily add images!

I remember back in 99 when I first bought this album. Before then I had only listened to trance and the common club hits, even Spice Girls.
I hadn’t learned about all the great music out there.
In comes Orbital, and blows my mind away. For a year straight. On my way to school.
I had it on literally 24/7 and it really opened up my music taste.

So naturally, this review isn’t technical or analytic, because the CD is pure emotion to me.

In retrospect of course I enjoy the high attention to detail, the way every track oozes of effort and talent, but at the time, I had no clue about such analytical things.
The CD shoots off with “Way Out”, where trumpets and synth lines morph away in complicated matters, and a beautiful repetitive melody comes into play.
Orbital always loved those long evolving tracks, and this CD is no exception. All the tracks feel like a journey on each own, where usually there is a first section, second section and then back to first section.
With all the sounds and small things they put in I can’t imagine the amount of work needed to sequence it all, but even so it never gets overpopulated or too messy, all the sounds are placed well and work well.

Now naturally in a review, the reviewer is supposed to compare it to earlier albums. And while I agree that this can be fruitful, in this case Middle Of Nowhere is just different. It’s different in the way that they no longer have as much a theme or a concept with the album as they did on Snivilisation or In Sides.
It’s music for music’s sake so to speak. It’s all about the sounds, the arrangements, the climaxes. The title ‘Middle Of Nowhere’ with a pure white cover sort of gives this away before listening to it.

It’s even so extremely enjoyable to listen to, and an album that will forever be a part of my soul.
I reckon it’s one of their best…

Some great stuff here, ae doesn’t disappoint!

Oh the joys of 90s television.. Before CGI became ultra-realistic and took precedence over story and content (see: Avatar), there were made several TV series with low budget, that still remained fantastic.
One of those shows was called ‘The Outer Limits’, and with its 90s charm and clever twists it took my heart.

The show focused on 1 hour science-fiction gems, where every episode ended in an unexpected twist.
There are different characters and leads in every episode, similar to The Twilight Zone.
In retrospect I appreciate this show even more because nothing like it has been or is being made.
The visual effects, while basic and primitive in many ways, also provided a completely unique atmosphere to the show.
Who can forget the last frame of one episode where aliens had taken over the world and an alien had sat itself on the presidents head in the Oval Office while the shot faded out with a view of Washington DC in ruins?

The show just plain worked. And even though it was a sci-fi show, it was also completely rooted in human social relations and societal critique.
Many ideas and concepts could be applied to real life occurences, and while the show could be called ‘crazy’, it never strayed away from its inner human core.

This is a show I highly recommend to any scifi fan, and luckily for us, all 7 seasons of it is on hulu.com for free!
Get some popcorn, take a night off and watch through it, I guarantee you’ll love it!

Today’s batch!

I was always a big fan of A-Team, so I hope this will be good.
The trailer looks a bit over the top, but then again that might be fun.

1. A global pandemic

A global pandemic would be the spreading of a virus or bacteria in a way that is unstoppable. It would take out large portions of the human species, and lead to the fall of the human civiilization. One such virus actually existed in the dark ages, and it killed millions of people worldwide, called the black death.

2. A geological event such as massive flood basalt, volcanism, or the eruption of a supervolcano

One such event, the Toba Eruption, occurred in Indonesia about 71,500 years ago. According to the Toba catastrophe theory, the event may have reduced human populations to only a few tens of thousands of individuals. Yellowstone Caldera is another such supervolcano, having undergone 142 or more caldera-forming eruptions in the past 17 million years.

3. A gamma ray burst or other devastating blast of cosmic radiation

One especially deadly hypothesized source is a hypernova, produced when a hypergiant star explodes and then collapses, sending vast amounts of radiation sweeping across hundreds or even thousands of lightyears of space. Hypernovas have never been observed; however, a hypernova may have been the cause of the Ordovician-Silurian extinction events. The nearest hypergiant is thought to be Eta Carinae, approximately 8,000 light-years distant.

4. An impact event caused by the collision of a large meteoroid, asteroid, or comet with Earth

A common theory postulates that the extinction of the dinosaurs occurred approximately 65 million years ago as a result of the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event when a large asteroid struck the earth, producing atmospheric dust which blocked solar energy and caused a significant lowering of temperatures worldwide. Evidence for this theory includes a sedimentary layer of iridium in the geological record and a large crater in the area of Chicxulub, Mexico. The Tunguska event (1908) was on a much smaller scale.

5. Severe climate change

Effects of climate change are far reaching, but some include extreme weather, rise of the seas, volcanism, earthquakes, hurricanes.

6. A nuclear, chemical, or biological war

Causes of a global war can be things like alien invasion, lack of resources on earth, zombie uprising, cybernetic revolt and any kind of conflict involving nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.

2012 phenomenon

The 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of eschatological beliefs that cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on December 21 or December 23, 2012, which is said to be the end-date of a 5,125-year-long cycle in the Mayan Long Count calendar.

Autechre’s beats and sound design has always fascinated me, and they have always been on the forefront of new sounds in the electronic world.
Using many different production techniques they have created some of the most unearthly records.
Some of it has sounded to some people as “ugly” or “harsh”, while to me it was always beautiful.
Some say they started on this musique concrete’ish path when Confield came out, but to me they began at Tri Repetae, although less pronounced than on later records.
While each record has been a surprise in its own way, if you look at all their pre-Oversteps records today, you will notice a red thread through it.
Percussion was always important, so it was initially weird for me when I heard Oversteps.

Rather than focusing on percussion as much, on Oversteps it’s all about melody and synth lines.
Bell sounds, string sounds and other simpler synth sounds are abound as they intermingle and morph in odd timings.
Some arrangements are impressively advanced, for instance on “os veix3″, where the beat stutters along with a kind of suspenseful synth line builds up until the climax comes with a subtle extra synth. Brilliant.
While Untilted to me sounded cold, distant, mono, Oversteps sounds warm and full and stereo.
Brilliant arrangements like ilanders and os veix3 are worth the album price alone, but there are a lot of other gems on there.
Tracks like “see on see” brings a beautiful ambient and kind of ice castle sounding melody, while st epreo is more beat oriented.
Songs I don’t like as much are O=0, because it tends to get a bit tedious and the melody/snare isn’t as interesting, and “r ess” is in my opinion a rather weak intro to such an album.
Other good tracks I enjoy are “known(1)” and “pt2ph8″ where the former has an absolutely gorgeous string main lead, and the latter has a dense bell sound arrangement.

Even though it may sound more traditional on first listen, nobody else really makes this type of music. They have once again created their own soundworld.
It’s surprising how they manage to take this direction, where mainly percussion and sound mangling takes such a distant place, where it was always the focus before.
But as usual the complexity is there, just in a different melodic rather than percussive mode.
Not only is the album gorgeous, it also in many ways ups the ante on what they do next. Do they go back to Confield/draft? Or is it a whole new direction all over?
A lot of possibilities now.

Stunning album, with some weaker songs, but most of them are gems and good.

9/10

So the iPad looks absolutely amazing, and I really think this is the future for these kinds of devices.
I think definitely this is the perfect reincarnation of an entertainment and communications device.

With a 9.7 inch display it’s neither too big nor too small to bring around, but I don’t think it will replace netbooks, or even the iPhone.
I think this is its own concept, rather than a mix of netbook/smartphone.
To me it seems like a better iPod, it’s better quality video watching, book reading, game playing, browsing etc.

The pricing is also amazing. I am definitely looking to get the 32GB G3 one, as I have yet to fill up my iPod touch and that’s also 32 GB.
One thing I notice lacking was a camera, and I’m not sure why since this is perfect for that kind of stuff.

Anyway,10 hours of battery time is pretty great, and a long standby :)

I think mostly it’ll be a device that you’ll use when traveling longer stretches, but also at home in your living room or in bed. Why not watch a movie or check your mail or browse the web?
It’s much more comfortable to just pick up the iPad and touch the screen rather than opening the netbook and using the mousepad to move around while typing in stuff.
I think this definitely will make it a lot easier and comfortable to do ‘quick computing’ everywhere you go, and at a comfortable netbook sized screen.

So yeah, definitely up to my expectations, and I will be buying it in 60 days :)
